Antigone est une tragédie grecque écrite par Sophocle vers 440 avant J.-C. Elle fait partie du cycle de pièces thébaines qui racontent l’histoire des membres de la famille d’Œdipe. Antigone, symbole de liberté individuelle, lutte contre un monde patriarcal suivant les lois intangibles et inébranlables des dieux. Antigone a longtemps été considérée comme une rebelle incarnant la quintessence du féminisme. Paradoxalement, c’est souvent à travers le regard de dramaturges masculins qu’elle a été façonnée à travers les âges, de Sophocle et Euripide à Jean Anouilh, Bertolt Brecht ou Antonio D’Alfonso. L’Antigone d’Anne Carson, quant à elle, insiste qu’elle ne veut plus parler «de lui, ou de lui, ou Lui» («Oh, I don’t want to talk about him, or him, or Him»).

Antigonick (2012) écrite par Anne Carson, poète canadienne et professeure d’histoire, est une traduction et une réinterprétation de la tragédie de Sophocle.

Carson does not «rewrite» Antigone. Her text becomes the verbal and visual scanning of a prolonged scream or cry. Emphatic, elliptical, Antigonick is more transference than translation, a relay of tragedy into a contemporary vernacular that mixes with archaic phrasing, sometimes lacking commas and periods, a halting and then a rushing of words structured by the syntax of grief and rage, spanning centuries. The lines often stand alone, as if broken off from the original text, stricken monuments. Stanzas comprising twenty or thirty lines in the original are distilled into single words and staccato exclamations.
